I originally gave this assignment as the final project in my DARTG/ARTG174 Adobe InDesign and DARTG/ARTG177 Portfolio classes in the Digital Arts Department at Golden West College. Over a 8 year period my students designed over 300+ books on veterans all over the world. By assigning such a personal project to the students they were emotionally invested in it and I had a very high completion rate at the end of the semester. I have selected some of the best and most diverse examples from this large collection. All projects used Photoshop and InDesign to layout and design the project, and using design process the student took the entire project from start to finished hard bound book for the veteran. The feedback I received from both the students and veterans was more than positive on this project. These books were also on display for many years at the annual Student Art Show at Golden West and are now on permanent display at the Veterans Center on campus.
Project Description

The Veterans History Project is a project of the Library of Congress aimed at collecting oral history interviews, memoirs, letters, diaries, photographs, and other original materials from veterans of World Wars I and II, and the Korean, Cold War, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf Wars and the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts (2001-present). Those citizen civilians who were actively involved in supporting war efforts (such as war industry workers, USO workers, flight instructors, medical volunteers, etc.) are also included in this project.

The GWC Digital Arts students in DARTG 174 InDesign and DARTG 177 Portfolio classes use the original Library of Congress project as a beginning point as their final class project. Students find and interview a veteran (not just American), collect photos and other material then write and design a 16 page book based on this research. Over the past two eight years the students have created 300+ books about veterans from all over the world. Displayed here is just a small sample of this growing collection.
